Dear DWP Community,

I am beyond thrilled to share that this past month, we danced with the newest members of our DWP family in New Brunswick, bringing DWP back to the Atlantic coast!

This expansion was sparked by DDC dancer Nancy Ward and the passion of the New Brunswick Parkinson’s Working Group. Over one unforgettable week, we welcomed more than 70 dancers to our first classes in the province and began building a network of instructors and volunteers to carry this work forward. We also deepened our connections with partners who share our commitment to this community, including Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada, Parkinson Canada, researchers at the University of New Brunswick, Nursing Home Without Walls, and local Parkinson’s advocates and champions.

Some of the most meaningful moments came from meeting members of our Daily Dance Connect family in person, like Glenda from Nova Scotia and Nancy from Fredericton. We even held a pop-up class at Judy and Simone’s house! There is simply nothing like experiencing the joy of movement together.

This trip reminded us that DWP is so much more than a dance class. It is a place of hope, laughter, connection and limitless possibilities, and the friendships we build online only grow stronger when we finally meet in person.

Thank you to everyone who danced with us, supported us and welcomed us so warmly. Stay tuned to learn more about our free weekly classes in New Brunswick. Until then, we are basking in the glow of new friendships, shared stories and the knowledge that connection moves us, everywhere we go.

With all my gratitude,

DWP LAUNCHES IN NEW BRUNSWICK
Bringing the Joy of Movement to New Brunswick

Last week, DWP found a new home in New Brunswick. The journey began more than three years ago with the enthusiasm of local dancer Nancy Ward and grew with the help of the New Brunswick Parkinson’s Working Group. Over the past six months, Mark Taylor, Harry Forestell, Kathy Pader and Colleen Ireland spent countless hours with us, learning about DWP and helping make these first-ever community classes such a success.

We began in Moncton, at the Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada where we met and trained instructors and volunteers, setting the stage for our launch class. More than 20 participants joined us for a class that was as moving as it was uplifting, a true reflection of what dance can mean for people living with PD. Among the many memorable moments, dancing alongside Paul Scobie, better known as “Super Paul,” was one we won’t soon forget. None of it would have been possible without Kathy and David Moore and local champions Carrie and Dave, whose leadership of the Moncton Parkinson Support Group helped bring this class to life.

From there, we made our way to Fredericton to continue training Marcia Dysart and Zsuzsa Szabo-Nyarady, who will lead weekly classes in the city. Close to 30 people filled the room for the launch class: dancers and care partners across ages and stages, physiotherapists and allied healthcare workers, and familiar faces including Alicia Barton, Colleen Ireland, DDC dancers Judy and Simone and Nancy Ward. The excitement was palpable, and it was clear how much this community has been looking for free, accessible programming dedicated to people living with Parkinson’s. We feel truly honoured to help meet that need.

Our final stop was Saint John, where Marcia welcomed us into her new studio, First City School of Dance, where she will also be teaching weekly classes to such a welcoming and warm group of volunteers and an enthusiastic PD community.

Moments like these remind us how powerful this program really is. For people living with Parkinson’s, it is a social prescription, offering connection, confidence and the simple joy of moving together with others who understand. We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us, welcomed us and helped make this launch possible, and we can’t wait to keep dancing together in New Brunswick!
DWP IN NEW BRUNSWICK!
Details are being finalized, but in the meantime, we encourage you to register for a class near you in Moncton, Fredericton or Saint John, and we will keep in touch as information becomes available!
YOU'RE INVITED!

What is it about dance? Let’s deconstruct it, together.

You’ve felt it. A shoulder loosens, a step finds its rhythm, a room full of strangers starts moving as one. Dance does something remarkable for people living with Parkinson’s. But why? What’s actually happening when the music starts?

More than a year ago, we set out to answer that question. The result was Deconstructing the Dance, a research project and presentation we brought to the World Parkinson Congress in 2026. Now we’re bringing it home to you.

Join us for an interactive evening with four people who see dance through very different eyes:

  • Dr. Priti Gros, neurologist specializing in movement disorders
  • Sarah Robichaud, DWP Founder & CEO
  • Malcolm and Charmaine Fernandez, Daily Dance Connect dancers who helped shape the original research
We won’t just talk about dance. We’ll do it together, then explore what we noticed from the inside out: the science, the artistry and the lived experience. Your observations matter as much as ours, so come curious, come ready to move, and help us discover what’s really at the heart of the dance.

Whether you live with Parkinson’s, care for someone who does, or simply love to move, you’re welcome here.

IT'S GIVING SEASON

Let’s Reach Higher, Together

Our dancers reach higher when they stretch their arms toward the sky to catch the stars. It’s movement that builds mobility and confidence and brings a smile that fills the room with joy.

For Dancing with Parkinson’s, reaching higher means keeping the transformational benefits of dance free for everyone.

Our Reach Higher campaign launches on Giving Tuesday, December 1, but you can make an early gift to help us start strong.

  • $250 helps cover one month of virtual classes.
  • $1,000 helps cover one month of in-person classes.

Every gift, once or monthly, helps our dancers reach higher.

Thank you for being part of our Dancing with Parkinson’s family.

MAGIC MOMENTS

Surprise Daily Dance Connect with Judy and Simone in Fredericton!

We are eternally grateful to Judy and Simone for opening their home to the DWP Team for a special visit and a surprise “pop-up” on the Daily Dance Connect, set to local New Brunswick music. Dancing side by side in their living room, while the rest of the DDC community joined in online, made for a deeply emotional experience and a beautiful reminder that meaningful connection often begins right at home. The real, in-person hugs and laughs will stay with us forever.

CELEBRATING PARTNERSHIPS
Partnership is at the heart of Dancing with Parkinson’s. By joining forces with like-minded organizations that support people living with Parkinson’s and seniors, we are able to extend our reach and deepen our impact. It is an honour to work alongside so many incredible partners and leaders in the field, and to celebrate our shared commitment to the communities we serve.

Building Connections at Parkinson's IQ + You!

On October 24th, Dancing with Parkinson’s attended Parkinson Canada’s “Parkinson’s IQ + You” event in Moncton. It was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with existing partners and meet new collaborators, all working toward the same goal: reaching and supporting more people living with Parkinson’s. We left inspired by the conversations we shared and the new friends we made from across Atlantic Canada. We can’t wait to dance with them soon and to continue our conversation about the essential need for sustainable and accessible programming in New Brunswick!

Fun Times at FoRP's Fall Funfest!

We loved getting into the festive spirit at our partner, Friends of Regent Park’s, 11th annual October Funfest, a free afternoon of fall fun for the whole family, with DWP instructor Sarah Martens leading the dancing!

"Dancing with Parkinson's with Bryna and Arnie Glickman" - A Short Film

We were thrilled to welcome Bryna and Arnie Glickman and filmmaker Laurence Siegel to the Daily Dance Connect to share Laurence’s short film, “Dancing with Parkinson’s with Bryna and Arnie.” Bryna, who lives with Parkinson's, has been dancing with us at Trinity for many years, and she often says it’s her favourite hour of the week, which is why she joins us online too. By her side is Arnie, a devoted champion for DWP, who has generously raised funds and awareness for our program because he knows the impact it has had on Bryna's life. Wherever they go, the two of them bring love and energy into the room.

Their longtime friend Laurence, whose work centres on contemporary dance and choreography, encouraged them to share their story on film. After the screening, the three spoke about making it and answered questions from our community.

Thank you, Bryna, Arnie and Laurence, for opening your hearts and sharing your story with all of us! To enjoy the film, click the button below. To see more of Laurence's work, you can find him on YouTube here.

Dear DWP Community,

One of the greatest joys of founding Dancing with Parkinson’s has been watching the Daily Dance Connect (DDC) community grow into something so much deeper than just an online program. We often hear about our dancers who have only ever met on Zoom over the years, making plans to see each other in real life!

This past month, I have been overwhelmed — in the best way — watching our dancers take these connections off the screen and into the world. From Glenda from Nova Scotia arranging to meet up with Bert and Winnie while she was in Ottawa, to the amazing group who gathered at Union Station’s Taco Bell to dance to “Cecilia” with a boombox in hand (which, for your viewing pleasure, you can click here to watch.) And then there was Loranna — who started taking the DDC in the early days — suddenly sitting on my couch, having flown in from Calgary. She brought her signature flair, including a bag full of costume glasses so we could “dress up” just like we do in class. It was surreal and perfect, and made it so very clear: this is about much more than movement. This is belonging. This is the true essence of everything I ever imagined for DWP.

It fills me with pride (and honestly, emotion) to see dancers going out for coffee after class, attending events together, and cheering each other on through life’s ups and downs. These aren’t just Zoom participants — many have become chosen family.

Watching these bonds blossom makes everything we’ve worked for so worth it. This is what DWP has always been about: joy, connection, and feeling seen. And through the month of June, that truth came to life in the most beautiful ways imaginable.

With love and gratitude,

Sarah Robichaud
Founder & CEO

MOMENTS OF MAGIC

Sunny Summer Wishes to our Friends at Forrest Hill Public School!

It has been an absolute joy welcoming our Grade 1/2 friends from Ms Wing Yee’s class to the Daily Dance Connect every Friday throughout the school year. Their quick login before recess to dance along with us has added such a spark of joy to our community.

These few shared minutes are a powerful reminder of how dance transcends age, ability, and distance — bringing people together across generations through music and movement. But the connection goes far beyond dancing. The children have formed genuine bonds with many of our dancers. Whenever someone in our group has a birthday or is recovering from surgery, Ms Wing Yee encourages her students to create heartfelt cards and send warm wishes. These acts of kindness speak volumes — not only about her inspiring leadership, but about the important life lessons her students are learning: empathy, compassion, and the simple power of caring for others.

Thank you, Ms Wing Yee, for nurturing such a thoughtful and generous spirit in your classroom. You are truly shaping the next generation in the most beautiful way.

We’ll miss seeing this enthusiastic crew each week — but we wish them a joyful summer and look forward to welcoming Ms Wing Yee’s new class in September!

Season’s Change and the Spirit of Dance in Prince Edward Island

Every season, our Charlottetown-based dance family has a quarterly tradition of building a special "Season's Change" dance. This one, welcoming summer, a beautiful reminder that as the world turns, we keep moving — together — with joy, rhythm, and connection. It’s been wonderful to see our PEI dance family growing, and we are so grateful for the incredible work of our Charlottetown-based instructor, Julia. Julia’s passion for sharing the joy of dance shines through in every class, inspiring and welcoming all who join.

DWP's Brenda Gorlick Leads the Way at the "Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s"

Brenda from Dancing with Parkinson’s was proud to take part in this year’s "Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s" — an inspiring annual event that raises awareness and funds for U-Turn Parkinson’s, a Winnipeg-based charity dedicated to empowering people with PD to live their best lives.

As an important partner of DWP, U-Turn Parkinson’s helps us bring the joy of movement to the local community through our free, weekly in-person dance class for Winnipeg residents. At this year’s walk, Brenda was front and centre, leading an uplifting warm-up that got participants of all ages and abilities moving together with joy, energy, and purpose. It was truly heartwarming to see the community unite in support of a cause that means so much to both of our organizations. To enjoy a little snapshot of Brenda getting walkers ready to roll, click here.

If you’re in the Winnipeg area, we hope you’ll join us on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. to experience the power of dance and connection. Click the button below to learn more and register!

She led participants in an invigorating dance warm-up that set the tone for an inspiring and inclusive day. The event brought together people of all abilities and ages, and Sarah’s enthusiasm helped ensure everyone felt welcome and part of the DWP family. It was truly a wonderful reminder of the power of community and movement!

Dancing Together Across Generations at the South Georgian Bay Festival!

Having three generations of the Barrie family — Andy, his daughter Jess, and her son Pary — join us to dance at the South Georgian Bay Festival was one of the unforgettable highlights of June. Many of you know Andy as the inspiration behind Sarah starting Dancing with Parkinson’s 18 years ago, making their shared presence at this event all the more meaningful.

The festival, organized by our friends at Living Better with Parkinson’s, brought together community and celebration. Sarah, Louise Stewart-Potts, and Phoebe North — who lead DWP classes in the Collingwood area — had festival-goers moving and grooving to all the crowd favourites.

We were also honoured to hear from Neurologist and researcher Dr. Tony Lang, who shared fascinating updates on breakthroughs in early Parkinson’s diagnosis. It was a joy to reconnect with our friends at Spinning Wheels and Parkinson Canada, and to meet many local DWP community members — many of whom we only usually get to see online!

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
How Weekly Dance Impacts Speech in Parkinson’s

A recent pilot study, "A Pilot Study Comparing Speech Characteristics in People With Parkinson’s Disease and Controls Dancing Weekly Over 5-Years", in which DWP's own Sarah Robichaud was a co-author, explored the long-term effects of dance participation on voice and speech characteristics in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Over a five-year period, researchers observed that regular engagement in dance classes contributed to significant improvements in vocal strength, clarity, and expressiveness — key elements often affected by Parkinson’s. These positive changes help participants better communicate, boosting confidence and enhancing social interaction.

Though preliminary, the findings suggest that integrating sustained dance programs into Parkinson’s care could offer meaningful benefits for both physical and communicative well-being.
