"Dance Me to DWP"!       DWP in BC!       Media       Classes       Calendar

Dear DWP Community,

What a joyful and creative start to 2026 it’s been!

We kicked off the year back on the West Coast, returning to communities that made one thing very clear in November: they want to dance!

Our first free weekly in-person class in Penticton welcomed more than 25 dancers, care partners, and loved ones into our dance space, and from the very first moment it felt golden…like home and family. This class has been growing already thanks to an extraordinary circle of humans — our incredible teaching artists Donna, Hailey, and Claudia, whose warmth and artistry are shaping something truly special. A giant thank you to our community champion, Nikos Theodosakis, whose leadership and vision helped bring everyone together.

After Penticton, we made our way back to Vancouver where the creativity and connection kept flowing. We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Lesley Telford, Founder and Creative director of Inverso Productions. As our lead teaching artist, there is so much imagination and collaboration ahead!

We were also honoured to welcome renowned neurologist, Dr. Tiffany Chow, to our full house community class, who shared powerful insights into why dance is such a transformative tool for people living with Parkinson’s and other neurological conditions.

And then…we danced — with over 30 dancers and partners filling the room with incredible energy. We can’t wait to launch regular workshops leading up to our first weekly Vancouver class on April 14th!

Now we turn toward the biggest celebration of our year — DWP’s annual fundraiser — the event that fuels all of this growth. It’s our chance to gather, celebrate creativity and resilience, and raise the funds that allow us to reach more dancers — always free of charge — online around the world, in remote communities across Canada, and in congregate settings where access is limited.

Thank you for being such an essential part of this journey. I can’t wait to celebrate, connect, and make this our most impactful year yet.

Let’s dance,

Sarah Robichaud
Founder & CEO

On April 10th, Dancing with Parkinson’s will bring together dancers, care partners, families, friends, students and supporters — in-person and online, from coast to coast — to raise $170,000 and ensure that more than 6,000 seniors and people living with Parkinson’s disease worldwide can continue to access movement, connection, and joy for free, every single day!

“Dance Me to DWP” is a signature intergenerational workshop celebrating the poetry and artistry of Leonard Cohen, brought to life through the electrifying movement and musicality of Ballets Jazz Montréal (BJM). Performers from BJM will lead DWP guests gathering at locations across the country and on Zoom from around the world through original choreography set to the music of this iconic Canadian legend.

We hope you will join us to celebrate 18 years of bringing people together, in-person and online, to build community, express creativity, and nurture belonging.

DWP IN BRITISH COLUMBIA!

Our time in BC was about so much more than growth — it was about deepening connection. Alongside training new volunteers and continuing our creative development with instructors, we were gifted the opportunity to truly get to know our partners and collaborators on a more personal level. There is simply nothing like an in-person conversation, a shared laugh, or a heartfelt hug to remind us why this work matters so deeply.

We were thrilled to have Ian Gerbrandt and Thea Wood from the Seniors Outreach and Resource Centre join us for teacher training in Kelowna where they were able to witness the DWP method first hand. With a Kelowna class set to kick off in early March, momentum is building and we’ve got a great crew to support another exciting launch!

In Penticton, we felt honoured to get some quality time with Nikos at his family’s former Greek restaurant — a powerful reminder of the deep community roots fuelling this expansion.

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Grace Park from Fraser Health Authority, Alisa, Cynthia and Kristina and the BC Brain Wellness Program, and Dan Dumsha of Improv for Work and Wellness to our Vancouver community class. And our course our deeply valued friend Richard Mayede and his sister Naomi who will be volunteering with us as a dance class assistant.

From inspiring classes to thoughtful exchanges behind the scenes, every moment of this most recent launch trip was especially meaningful. This coast-to-coast expansion is a testament to the passion, collaboration, and shared commitment of so many, and has most certainly strengthened our community.

Come Dance with us in Penticton!

DWP is now offering in-person classes every Friday in Penticton! Very special thanks to our phenomenal team of instructors, Hailey, Claudia and Donna, and volunteers, local champions like Niko, and partners like Parkinson Society BC for being part of making this happen — we could not do it without you!

NEW WINNIPEG CLASS

Breaking Down the Language Barrier in DWP's Latest Hybrid Class

In partnership with NORC Innovation Centre, Dancing with Parkinson’s has launched our newest hybrid (online and in-person) dance class at a central Toronto Seniors Housing building in the downtown core. The in-person class is led by our sensational instructor, Phoebe Chu, who teaches in both Mandarin and Cantonese — creating an immediately welcoming and inclusive space.

The energy in the room for our first class was palpable. Dancers joked, laughed, and danced alongside new friends, and the sense of connection was unmistakable. A building representative shared that many residents don’t know their neighbours, however after class, a number of participants were exchanging contact information so they could connect between DWP sessions.

We are very grateful for the opportunity to share the joy of music, movement, and community with another incredible group of dancers.

DANCING WITH PHOEBE!

“Mime Over Mime” Workshop with Barbara and Sarah!

We are so grateful to Barbara Salsberg-Mathews and Sarah Martens for sharing their love and expertise in therapeutic mime with the DWP team! What an inspiring opportunity to learn more about this powerful art form, and to discover how we can apply mime to our dance classes, thanks to support from the Parkinson Canada CARE Fund.

Rooted in centuries-old movement traditions, mime is emerging as an effective therapy for people living with Parkinson’s — supporting balance, gait, coordination, and everyday movement through imagery and motor memory.

We love seeing learning turn into action: Laetitia has already begun integrating these techniques into her Thornhill class this week, bringing fresh creative tools directly to our dancers.

Thank you again, Barbara and Sarah! We are so excited to continue sharing this expressive work across our DWP classes.

We’ve been having the best time leading demos and dancing with new friends through the beginning of 2026. So far this month, we have been offering a number of introductory classes through the Council on Aging in Ottawa, as well as connecting with the community at Montgomery Place later in February. We look forward to getting to know the folks who will be joining the NORC's (Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities) upcoming spring event!

"Passing on your Life Stories" with Carol Williams-Wong

We were thrilled to hear from Carol who shared her experience writing five published memoirs including "Letters to My Grandchildren" and "Conversations with a Hakka Dragon Lady", and how documenting her life stories has helped her connect with family and inspire others to do the same.

She touched on her Chinese and Jamaican histories and cultural traditions, and showcased how our DWP community can write their own memoir like she did, leaving a legacy for future generations and others to enjoy.

Carol, your work is beautiful and so very moving! We are so grateful to you for sharing your art with us.

VOLUNTEER WITH DWP
RAVE REVIEWS

I attended the Dancing with Parkinson's. I thought it was amazing. The lead instructor was superb as were the volunteers and the other instructors. I felt immediately welcomed and part of a warm group.

The combination of effort on the part of the instructors, the message they were bringing to us as motion debilitated seniors, their lively enthusiasm, and the music playing in the background, all of it added up to be a spectacular hour spent.

Dear DWP Community,

One of the greatest joys of founding Dancing with Parkinson’s has been watching the Daily Dance Connect (DDC) community grow into something so much deeper than just an online program. We often hear about our dancers who have only ever met on Zoom over the years, making plans to see each other in real life!

This past month, I have been overwhelmed — in the best way — watching our dancers take these connections off the screen and into the world. From Glenda from Nova Scotia arranging to meet up with Bert and Winnie while she was in Ottawa, to the amazing group who gathered at Union Station’s Taco Bell to dance to “Cecilia” with a boombox in hand (which, for your viewing pleasure, you can click here to watch.) And then there was Loranna — who started taking the DDC in the early days — suddenly sitting on my couch, having flown in from Calgary. She brought her signature flair, including a bag full of costume glasses so we could “dress up” just like we do in class. It was surreal and perfect, and made it so very clear: this is about much more than movement. This is belonging. This is the true essence of everything I ever imagined for DWP.

It fills me with pride (and honestly, emotion) to see dancers going out for coffee after class, attending events together, and cheering each other on through life’s ups and downs. These aren’t just Zoom participants — many have become chosen family.

Watching these bonds blossom makes everything we’ve worked for so worth it. This is what DWP has always been about: joy, connection, and feeling seen. And through the month of June, that truth came to life in the most beautiful ways imaginable.

With love and gratitude,

Sarah Robichaud

MOMENTS OF MAGIC

Sunny Summer Wishes to our Friends at Forrest Hill Public School!

It has been an absolute joy welcoming our Grade 1/2 friends from Ms Wing Yee’s class to the Daily Dance Connect every Friday throughout the school year. Their quick login before recess to dance along with us has added such a spark of joy to our community.

These few shared minutes are a powerful reminder of how dance transcends age, ability, and distance — bringing people together across generations through music and movement. But the connection goes far beyond dancing. The children have formed genuine bonds with many of our dancers. Whenever someone in our group has a birthday or is recovering from surgery, Ms Wing Yee encourages her students to create heartfelt cards and send warm wishes. These acts of kindness speak volumes — not only about her inspiring leadership, but about the important life lessons her students are learning: empathy, compassion, and the simple power of caring for others.

Thank you, Ms Wing Yee, for nurturing such a thoughtful and generous spirit in your classroom. You are truly shaping the next generation in the most beautiful way.

We’ll miss seeing this enthusiastic crew each week — but we wish them a joyful summer and look forward to welcoming Ms Wing Yee’s new class in September!

Season’s Change and the Spirit of Dance in Prince Edward Island

Every season, our Charlottetown-based dance family has a quarterly tradition of building a special "Season's Change" dance. This one, welcoming summer, a beautiful reminder that as the world turns, we keep moving — together — with joy, rhythm, and connection. It’s been wonderful to see our PEI dance family growing, and we are so grateful for the incredible work of our Charlottetown-based instructor, Julia. Julia’s passion for sharing the joy of dance shines through in every class, inspiring and welcoming all who join.

Dancing with Parkinson’s is about more than movement — it’s about building community and celebrating every season of life. We’re thrilled to see this spirit flourishing on Prince Edward Island!

DWP's Brenda Gorlick Leads the Way at the "Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s"

Brenda from Dancing with Parkinson’s was proud to take part in this year’s "Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s" — an inspiring annual event that raises awareness and funds for U-Turn Parkinson’s, a Winnipeg-based charity dedicated to empowering people with PD to live their best lives.

As an important partner of DWP, U-Turn Parkinson’s helps us bring the joy of movement to the local community through our free, weekly in-person dance class for Winnipeg residents. At this year’s walk, Brenda was front and centre, leading an uplifting warm-up that got participants of all ages and abilities moving together with joy, energy, and purpose. It was truly heartwarming to see the community unite in support of a cause that means so much to both of our organizations. She led participants in an invigorating dance warm-up that set the tone for an inspiring and inclusive day. Dancing Together Across Generations at the South Georgian Bay Festival!

Having three generations of the Barrie family — Andy, his daughter Jess, and her son Pary — join us to dance at the South Georgian Bay Festival was one of the unforgettable highlights of June. Many of you know Andy as the inspiration behind Sarah starting Dancing with Parkinson’s 18 years ago, making their shared presence at this event all the more meaningful.

The festival, organized by our friends at Living Better with Parkinson’s, brought together community and celebration. Sarah, Louise Stewart-Potts, and Phoebe North — who lead DWP classes in the Collingwood area — had festival-goers moving and grooving to all the crowd favourites.

We were also honoured to hear from Neurologist and researcher Dr. Tony Lang, who shared fascinating updates on breakthroughs in early Parkinson’s diagnosis. It was a joy to reconnect with our friends at Spinning Wheels and Parkinson Canada, and to meet many local DWP community members — many of whom we only usually get to see online!

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
How Weekly Dance Impacts Speech in Parkinson’s

A recent pilot study, "A Pilot Study Comparing Speech Characteristics in People With Parkinson’s Disease and Controls Dancing Weekly Over 5-Years", in which DWP's own Sarah Robichaud was a co-author, explored the long-term effects of dance participation on voice and speech characteristics in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Over a five-year period, researchers observed that regular engagement in dance classes contributed to significant improvements in vocal strength, clarity, and expressiveness — key elements often affected by Parkinson’s. These positive changes help participants better communicate, boosting confidence and enhancing social interaction.

Though preliminary, the findings suggest that integrating sustained dance programs into Parkinson’s care could offer meaningful benefits for both physical and communicative well-being.
