Dear DWP Community,

As we step into a new year, I want to say thank you for everything you have brought to Dancing with Parkinson’s.

However you showed up — through the Daily Dance Connect, joining in-person classes, participating in demonstration classes and events, or simply by reading these newsletters — you are an essential part of this thriving community.

Together, you are helping to create a space where everyone is welcome — where differences are celebrated, friendships grow across cultures and time zones, and support is shared in meaningful ways. This is a family that is literally and figuratively moving through life together, and we love that dance is the gateway to this magic.

As we look ahead, we are grateful, excited and ready. We have big plans for the year to come that will allow us to show up more fully for you and with you, wherever you are.

I am so appreciative of this community we have built together and will forever cherish the moments and memories we made together in 2025!

Let’s dance,

Sarah Robichaud

A former Senior Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute, she has long driven innovation in patient and family support across the neurodegenerative disorder community. Her expertise extends to guiding clinical trials aimed at developing next-generation dementia therapies, ensuring that new treatments are both safe and meaningful for those who need them most. DWP's PENTICTON CLASS INSTRUCTORS
We are eternally grateful for the enthusiasm and expertise our instructors share with the DWP community, and we are thrilled to introduce our newest teaching artists who will be leading DWP's brand new class in Penticton!
Claudia Moore

Claudia Moore, a dancer, choreographer, artistic director and force of the Canadian dance scene since the 1970s has recently completed the Dance for PD® introductory teacher training with DWP. A dance artist and community connector based in West Kelowna, BC, she brings a deep commitment to inclusive, joy-filled movement. Recognized with the Jacqueline Lemieux Award for Excellence in Dance, Claudia finds her greatest joy in sharing movement with others. She loved dancing with the Penticton community in November and looks forward to returning in 2026 to move together once again.

For the past year and a half, she has been producing and teaching Contact Improvisation, building on over a decade of practice. She performed 22 Rooms at Living Things Festival 2025 and works as a performer, facilitator, and writer across British Columbia. Having supported her father while he lived with Parkinson’s, dancing with the Penticton class moved her to tears and feels like a true gift — sharing the joy of movement.

For Donna, DWP is not just a program — it is a calling that aligns with her commitment to accessibility, compassion, and celebrating the unique strengths of every learner.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Your Support Helps Us Keep Dancers Dancing!

Through 2025, you helped thousands of seniors and people living with Parkinson’s move, connect, and thrive.

The voices and smiles you see here from seniors, care partners, and people living with Parkinson’s reflect the impact of your generosity and belief in Dancing with Parkinson’s.

Because of you, more participants than ever joined one of our 46 weekly online, in-person, and hybrid programs this year — reaching communities from small towns to city centres and even across borders. Together, we launched 16 new classes supporting mobility, balance, creativity, and emotional well-being. With 6,420 registered dancers, we built a national community rooted in movement, joy, and belonging. Our hybrid classes became safe, welcoming spaces for those who often feel isolated, including residents in seven Toronto Seniors Housing/NORC buildings. More than 15 instructors were trained to deliver Parkinson’s-specific dance programs nationwide, and thanks to your support, every class remained free and accessible.

Thank you for standing with us and helping create a world where seniors and people living with Parkinson’s can move with confidence and community.

And if you didn't have a chance to contribute during the holiday season, there's still time, and your support is always appreciated!

MOMENTS OF MAGIC
Everyday at DWP, we are so fortunate to experience countless magical moments — those heart-filling, soul-warming connections that happen when dancers come together. Whether online, in person, or even on their own time and initiative, these bonds are sparked by the shared experience of DWP's programs. It is in these moments that we are reminded of the true power of what DWP offers: connection and community.

Celebrating the Season with Friends of All Ages

We always love having Ms. Wing Yee’s Grade 1–2 class join the Daily Dance Connect to celebrate the season with Sarah Murphy-Dyson and our online dance family. Having these young dancers log in is always a joy — a beautiful reminder of the wonder, connection, and simple happiness of the holidays and the heart of our DWP community.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
Dancing with Parkinson’s frequently contributes to and follows fascinating and important research that highlights the impact of arts interventions, like dance, for people living with Parkinson’s and seniors. We share these findings to offer our community easy access to knowledge that can enhance, inform and support overall well-being.

"Dancing through time: Cognitive changes over six years of community dance in Parkinson's disease"

This study, in which Sarah was a contributor, explores how long-term participation in a weekly community dance program affects people living with Parkinson’s disease. Over six years, researchers found that those who danced regularly showed early improvements and better long-term stability in cognition and movement compared to those who were inactive, suggesting dance may help support brain health and mobility over time.

Exciting News from Parkinson Canada, Kanta Marwah and Dr. Lorraine Kalia!

We love seeing the meaningful intersections between our friends and partners — working together to strengthen Parkinson’s research, care, and community.

Parkinson Canada recently announced new research funding through the Kanta Marwah Research Innovation Fund (KMRIF). Kanta, a regular and much-loved dancer who frequently logs into DWP’s Daily Dance Connect from Ottawa, established the fund to support high-impact research that addresses critical unmet needs for people living with Parkinson’s and helps accelerate discoveries from the lab to the clinic.

We were especially thrilled to share that the inaugural KMRIF grant was awarded to Dr. Lorraine Kalia, a brilliant neurologist and valued researcher on DWP’s Board of Directors, for her groundbreaking work exploring blood–brain barrier-crossing peptides as a potential treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

This powerful collaboration — rooted in community, research, and lived experience — is truly inspiring. Congratulations to all involved!

Dear DWP Community,

One of the greatest joys of founding Dancing with Parkinson’s has been watching the Daily Dance Connect (DDC) community grow into something so much deeper than just an online program. We often hear about our dancers who have only ever met on Zoom over the years, making plans to see each other in real life!

This past month, I have been overwhelmed — in the best way — watching our dancers take these connections off the screen and into the world. From Glenda from Nova Scotia arranging to meet up with Bert and Winnie while she was in Ottawa, to the amazing group who gathered at Union Station’s Taco Bell to dance to “Cecilia” with a boombox in hand (which, for your viewing pleasure, you can click here to watch.) And then there was Loranna — who started taking the DDC in the early days — suddenly sitting on my couch, having flown in from Calgary. She brought her signature flair, including a bag full of costume glasses so we could “dress up” just like we do in class. It was surreal and perfect, and made it so very clear: this is about much more than movement. This is belonging. This is the true essence of everything I ever imagined for DWP.

It fills me with pride (and honestly, emotion) to see dancers going out for coffee after class, attending events together, and cheering each other on through life’s ups and downs. These aren’t just Zoom participants — many have become chosen family.

Watching these bonds blossom makes everything we’ve worked for so worth it. This is what DWP has always been about: joy, connection, and feeling seen. And through the month of June, that truth came to life in the most beautiful ways imaginable.

With love and gratitude,

Sarah Robichaud

MOMENTS OF MAGIC

Sunny Summer Wishes to our Friends at Forrest Hill Public School!

It has been an absolute joy welcoming our Grade 1/2 friends from Ms Wing Yee’s class to the Daily Dance Connect every Friday throughout the school year. Their quick login before recess to dance along with us has added such a spark of joy to our community.

These few shared minutes are a powerful reminder of how dance transcends age, ability, and distance — bringing people together across generations through music and movement. But the connection goes far beyond dancing. The children have formed genuine bonds with many of our dancers. Whenever someone in our group has a birthday or is recovering from surgery, Ms Wing Yee encourages her students to create heartfelt cards and send warm wishes. These acts of kindness speak volumes — not only about her inspiring leadership, but about the important life lessons her students are learning: empathy, compassion, and the simple power of caring for others.

Thank you, Ms Wing Yee, for nurturing such a thoughtful and generous spirit in your classroom. You are truly shaping the next generation in the most beautiful way.

We’ll miss seeing this enthusiastic crew each week — but we wish them a joyful summer and look forward to welcoming Ms Wing Yee’s new class in September!

Season’s Change and the Spirit of Dance in Prince Edward Island

Every season, our Charlottetown-based dance family has a quarterly tradition of building a special "Season's Change" dance. This one, welcoming summer, a beautiful reminder that as the world turns, we keep moving — together — with joy, rhythm, and connection. It’s been wonderful to see our PEI dance family growing, and we are so grateful for the incredible work of our Charlottetown-based instructor, Julia. Julia’s passion for sharing the joy of dance shines through in every class, inspiring and welcoming all who join.

Dancing with Parkinson’s is about more than movement — it’s about building community and celebrating every season of life. We’re thrilled to see this spirit flourishing on Prince Edward Island!

DWP's Brenda Gorlick Leads the Way at the "Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s"

Brenda from Dancing with Parkinson’s was proud to take part in this year’s "Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s" — an inspiring annual event that raises awareness and funds for U-Turn Parkinson’s, a Winnipeg-based charity dedicated to empowering people with PD to live their best lives.

As an important partner of DWP, U-Turn Parkinson’s helps us bring the joy of movement to the local community through our free, weekly in-person dance class for Winnipeg residents. At this year’s walk, Brenda was front and centre, leading an uplifting warm-up that got participants of all ages and abilities moving together with joy, energy, and purpose. It was truly heartwarming to see the community unite in support of a cause that means so much to both of our organizations. Dancing Together Across Generations at the South Georgian Bay Festival!

Having three generations of the Barrie family — Andy, his daughter Jess, and her son Pary — join us to dance at the South Georgian Bay Festival was one of the unforgettable highlights of June. Many of you know Andy as the inspiration behind Sarah starting Dancing with Parkinson’s 18 years ago, making their shared presence at this event all the more meaningful.

The festival, organized by our friends at Living Better with Parkinson’s, brought together community and celebration. Sarah, Louise Stewart-Potts, and Phoebe North — who lead DWP classes in the Collingwood area — had festival-goers moving and grooving to all the crowd favourites.

We were also honoured to hear from Neurologist and researcher Dr. Tony Lang, who shared fascinating updates on breakthroughs in early Parkinson’s diagnosis. It was a joy to reconnect with our friends at Spinning Wheels and Parkinson Canada, and to meet many local DWP community members — many of whom we only usually get to see online!

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION
How Weekly Dance Impacts Speech in Parkinson’s

A recent pilot study, "A Pilot Study Comparing Speech Characteristics in People With Parkinson’s Disease and Controls Dancing Weekly Over 5-Years", in which DWP's own Sarah Robichaud was a co-author, explored the long-term effects of dance participation on voice and speech characteristics in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Over a five-year period, researchers observed that regular engagement in dance classes contributed to significant improvements in vocal strength, clarity, and expressiveness — key elements often affected by Parkinson’s. These positive changes help participants better communicate, boosting confidence and enhancing social interaction.

Though preliminary, the findings suggest that integrating sustained dance programs into Parkinson’s care could offer meaningful benefits for both physical and communicative well-being.
