Dancing with Parkinson's Good Newsletter, February 2024

Dear DWP Community,

Well I'd say 2024 is off to a pretty incredible start! It's hard to believe that it's only February and we've already celebrated our 16th anniversary, enjoyed some really special time together in-person and online at "The Look of... DWP" workshop, and raised over $70,000 toward free, inclusive dance classes for people living with Parkinson's and seniors around the world! What an incredible journey we are taking together.

Thank you for showing up just as you are each and every day and for your unwavering support of our program. We often try and distill what the special sauce of the DWP family is, and we know now with complete confidence, it is love.

With endless gratitude, appreciation and LOVE,

Sarah Robichaud
Founder & CEO
On Friday, January 19th over 300 dancers, friends and community partners joined us in-person at Meridian Hall and online via Zoom to experience the embodiment of connection, joy and LOVE. Sam Black and Courtney Lopes from the Mark Morris Dance Group led us through three stunning pieces from the MMDG  performance "The Look of Love", teaching us spectacular choreography inspired by the music of the late, great Burt Bacharach.
As we danced with the Mark Morris Dance Group's dancers and the community we have built over the past 16 years, we felt the full-circle nature of this event. It was this very New York City-based dance company and their groundbreaking Dance for PD® classes that, in 2007, inspired Sarah Robichaud to launch DWP in Canada. So to come together in celebration of movement, connection and love was truly fitting.
We danced, we laughed we cried and we came together as a family united by the shared desire to connect with old and new friends and experience transformation through the arts.

WOW. The DWP Mark Morris dance event gave a whole new meaning to TGIF! The room was full of so much love, joy, and positive energy. Whether a fundraiser or a daily class, it is hard to describe a DWP event. Any attempt does not do it justice. Therefore, I have come to believe that a DWP event can only be felt. I am sure that anyone there today (in person or virtually) felt “it”—whatever that “it” is. Thank you Sarah and DWP team for hosting such a wonderful and touching get together. It is a privilege to be a part of something so special.

School children from Ms Wing-Yee's grade 1 class who regularly log into the Daily Dance Connect, joined us at Meridian Hall. Together with their families they danced, met our DWP participants in person, and handed out beautiful buttons and cards they had made for DWP's participants. It was so special having our young dancers with us, reminding us of the power of intergenerational bonds with the joy and energy they brought to all of us!
A very special thank you to our valued partners at TO Live, Dance for PD® and the Mark Morris Dance Group for helping us to create a place for community, connection, movement and love.

Thank you to our supporters, donors and sponsors, volunteers, DWP instructors and community partners with whom offering free dance classes 365 days a year for people living with Parkinson's and seniors from around the world simply would not be possible.

Taras and his dad, Nestor, have a very special connection. It’s the kind of bond that you feel without having to know them. Both highly accomplished Ukrainian dancers, Taras and Nestor bring their passion for movement to the in-person classes at Trinity St. Paul and DWP events including this year’s “The Look of… DWP” workshop.

Nestor began dancing in high school, joining the renowned Ukrainian dance company “Kalyna”. He went on to become a volunteer choreographer, inspiring many dancers including Taras, who would follow in his father's "dance" steps. Together they participated in the very popular and long running international cultural festival "Caravan" which is where Nestor created a comical solo character dance to perform during pavilion shows. To this day, that same expressive, enthusiastic character will spontaneously pop up out of his chair at the Trinity class, much to the delight of fellow dancers, volunteers and the DWP team!

Taras grew up in the world of dance, certainly thanks to his dad’s influence, but his mother was a spectacular ballroom dancer in her own right. Taras remembers watching his parents dancing together at home, and it was her, his “first and best dance partner”, who taught him how to waltz, polka and tango.

When asked what he and Nestor love about DWP, Taras says that the classes make him feel “extra alive”. He leaves feeling invigorated and rejuvenated, and reminded of the power of dance to create connection. “I value the bonding that I experience when I can connect with my father during the class, especially when I get the chance to do the "mirroring" exercise together, or during his spontaneous Ukrainian dance moments!” In his dad, Taras has witnessed a greater sense of mobility and alertness which carries over at home, helping to manage his PD symptoms.

Taras loves to see Nestor so engaged when he’s dancing with the DWP community. In addition to his prowess on the dance floor, according to Taras, it is in these moments that Nestor becomes his most natural, romantic and humorous self. “The community of participants, volunteers and teachers have become a caring and supportive family of friends for both of us”, Taras shares.

After class, lifted by the energy of dance, Nestor and Taras will reminisce about old times: fond memories of their touring days, special occasions centred around movement and music, and dancing as a family at home.

Nestor and Taras, you are shining examples of how dance creates connection, community and, above all, LOVE. Thank you for sharing your story, your energy and your joy with us.

Announcing...the DWP Book Club!

Thanks to the creative initiative of our community, in March 2024 DWP will be launching a bi-monthly book club! Thank you longtime Daily Dance Connect and U-Turn Parkinson's (Winnipeg) dancer, Keith Strachan, for volunteering to lead our first book club session!

Keith has selected a recent favourite book, Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis (the first book to win both Canada Reads and the 2015 Scotiabank Giller Prize), and invites us all to read and discuss it with him during our first book club (date in March TBD).

Stay tuned for more details, and in the meantime, start thinking about your own favourite reads to share with the DWP dance family!
A member of DWP's dance family, Anne Freeman, shared her beautiful bound collection of poems "The Book of Exceptions" during her recent Slice of Life presentation on January 30th. Through March 2024, Anne is very generously donating $5 from the sale of each copy of "The Book of Exceptions" to Dancing with Parkinson's. Would you like to order a copy? You can do so via Anne's website: www.annefreemanworks.com.

Thank you to fellow speakers for the engaging dialogue, and to the Division of Neurology at the University of Toronto for the opportunity to share DWP’s transformative work.

RAVE REVIEWS

Thank you all for being so open and willing to include us in your programme.  It is such a wonderful outreach and this has changed the dynamics of my class.  It is a complete empowerment from both ends.  If only you could see how much these guys enjoy dancing daily with each other and especially on Fridays with your class (they all want to be in the spotlight!!).  Thank you for the opportunity for the students to hand out their work.  It really sends such a powerful message to them that they are impacting others.  Surprisingly enough, these little ones do not see themselves as meaning makers and can do great things in the world through simple acts of kindness and this really helped them see that they can make an impact.
